This interactive workshop will present an approach and practice techniques for teaching theory and musicianship in a popular music context. Whether for focused theory and musicianship classes or for integrating this learning into the flow of student ensemble practice, songwriting and instrumental lessons, a deeper understanding of how the music they like works will inspire and empower your students to feel more immersed in their music and more creatively free. Music theory is mind blowing when learned as a treasure map and cookbook of expressive devices rather than a set of rules. Aural skills practiced with pop music repertoire and challenging musicianship games become a springboard for student success when learning new songs and improvising.
